I was recently asked to help out in moving an e-commerce store that was in Wix to Woocommerce in WordPress and boy did it open a can of worms!
I understand the attraction of sites such as Wix and Weebly with their promises of DIY websites and I can see that they do have their place, but when it comes to business, these kind of services are downright dangerous. If your business relies on your website then my warning to you is only do it if you are happy with a site that has very limited SEO opportunities, very limited configuration options and you have absolutely no plans to ever move away – especially if you run a store.
Wix have some great modules for website building, but no choice. You want a shop?, yes, you can have one, but only this one. You want a slider, great, but again only this one. There is simply no choice, very limited configuration available and no way to export your data. In the words of Henry Ford – “Any customer can have a car painted any color that he wants so long as it is black”.
Wix is like a walled garden, they offer no real way to automate the export of your data and you find yourself doing things like exporting images one at a time. In the end I used a 3rd party service that have scripted the process of transferring data but this was also fairly painful, buggy and there were lots of issues. The whole project was bit of nightmare, and although we got there eventually, it would have been a lot easier to have built the new shop from scratch than trying to move the existing data….lesson learned there for sure!
To their credit, at least I was able to transfer the domain away from them and sort out DNS and mail exchange etc, which is more than can be said for some hosts. But the most critical part of a website is its content but if you are unable to get to it, where does that leave you?
So, in a nutshell, be careful
I personally like a bit of DIY and am reasonably handy with a spanner and a hammer, but if I need my whole bathroom re-modelling I need a professional. The web is no different.Do not make the mistake of thinking you can do this yourself by using Wix and Weebly. Yes, you get a functioning site, but is that enough? Short term gain , but long term pain for sure is not a good model on which to build a business.
You have been warned
